WalMart applications to help with medical expenses
Walmart is applying to cover the costs of medical expenses for patients across Canada.
The retailer is seeking permission from the Health Canada to cover medical expenses of its employees and employees of their family members, such as spouses and children, with up to $1,000.
“It’s really about our ability to assist in the medical process, to make sure that they get the best care possible,” said Jennifer Smith, vice-president of customer services.
“We do not believe it would be feasible for us to cover this under our existing policy or for us as an employer to cover it.”
The company plans to begin accepting applications for its new medical plan in the next few weeks.
The company was also contacted by Health Canada about providing medical care at its store in Calgary.
The province said it would have to consider whether it could meet its financial obligations to reimburse the retailer if the company was not to participate in the new plan.
